The drink was a hit. The competing origin claim comes from Hanlin Tea Room in Tainan, whose owner Tu Tsong-he independently created a similar drink around the same time. Both companies remain locked in ongoing trademark disputes. The 'bubbles' in the name originally referred to the air bubbles created by shaking — the tapioca pearls came after and were nicknamed boba (slang for 'large breasts' in Taiwanese), later shortened to 'boba' in American usage. The global boba market reached $2.5 billion in 2023, with Taiwan producing over 1 billion cups annually for export.
